Two Major Gift Options You Should Not Ignore

Veteran fundraiser Jay Love writes in Bloomerang a simple but powerful article with a reminder about the two major gift types with the “largest potential” that he says are “rarely discussed.”

The two “potentially quite large” major gifting options he refers to are
  1. Naming the Charity as the Beneficiary of Your IRA
  2. Naming the Charity in Your Will
Jay believes that these two instruments should not be ignored by any size nonprofit that is engaged in fundraising.

Here are a few of the 10 ideas Jay has for you to discuss at your next Board Meeting:
  • Invite an estate planning attorney or two on your board or committee
  • Invite a financial planning professional to join your board
  • Make your first gifts of each type come from your CEO / Executive Director and yourself.
Finally, consider forming a “Legacy” related group or society to recognize those donors who participate in either option.
