Mercy Health Muskegon

Mercy Health Muskegon, a 409 licensed-bed primary, acute and specialty care system within the Mercy Health West Michigan region is a teaching hospital and is one of the largest health systems in West Michigan with 3,500 colleagues, 17,000 inpatient discharges and nearly 145,000 emergency/urgent care visits annually.  The system has four hospital campuses and 375 physicians.  Mercy Health Muskegon offers a number of specialty care services for the region, including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, bariatric surgery and spine services.  Mercy Health operates a comprehensive, multi-discipline regional simulation lab in Muskegon.

Mercy originally began a client relationship with Hillary Lyons Associates in 1993 as a means to expand their philanthropic results in support of their operations and capital needs.  As their Development Council grew, they began to initiate a series of two to three year projects to meet specific community needs and to attract major gifts donors to their program.  Their projects have included a birth center, heart and vascular institute, diagnostic imaging, comprehensive cancer care, and most recently the Imagine. Build. TRANSFORM campaign for a new medical center slated to open in 2019.

The key to Mercy’s success using the Development Council model has been the time and attention spent training and orienting their volunteers, including attendance at annual training seminars provided by Hillary Lyons Associates, on-site retreats, and continual recruitment and orientation for new volunteers to keep their program vibrant and visible with community leadership.  In addition, Mercy has given their development staff the tools to work with a wide range of volunteers by ensuring that each staff member attend HLA training seminars, and by holding annual strategic planning sessions for the department facilitated by their HLA consultant.

As Roger Spoelman, President and CEO of Trinity Health West Michigan states: “The Hillary Lyons Associates' model has given our volunteers the tools and training needed to successfully build lasting relationships with our donors. Through the onsite and summer seminars provided by the HLA consultants, our volunteers learn to cultivate and directly solicit donations to support our financial needs. After receiving this unique training, we have found that our volunteers are trained, confident, and committed. They continue to raise money for us over a period of many years. I'm sold on this very effective model."

Today, Mercy Health Muskegon is part of Mercy Health, a partnership of hospitals, doctors and other health care providers throughout West Michigan, that provides about $40 million annually in uncompensated care; an philanthropy continues to be a core fiscal strategy that allows them to serve all patients in their community.

They are also part of Trinity Health, one of the largest multi-institutional Catholic health care delivery systems in the nation. It serves people and communities in 21 states from coast to coast with 86 hospitals, 128 continuing care facilities and home health and hospice programs that provide nearly 2.8 million visits annually.

After many years of success, Mercy continues to grow and refine their Philanthropy Council comprised of dedicated volunteers, and Hillary Lyons Associates' is proud to continue a long term client relationship with an organization committed to their health care mission.
